Weekly Reading Wrap Up- March 1st to 7th

Hello My Fellow Book Devourers,

The first week of March was not m best reading week. I have only read three books over this week and I honestly feel like a failure. This amount of reading is unthinkable to me because it’s something I do so much of. I know everyone has different rates of reading, but mine is usually higher so I feel bad. At least I enjoyed all the books I have read.

I reread two out of three books. The only new book was The Devil in the White City, which I have been putting off reading for ages. Why do I do that with books I really want to read? I do not know. Someone give me some answers.

“Delaying death is one of my favorite hobbies” ― Rick Riordan, The Mark of Athena
  • The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan- Rating 10/10- The ending of this book is still traumatic even on the sixth read-through. I will never be okay with that ending. It’s the PTSD it brings up. The flashbacks to me screaming my head off the first time I read it. This book brings all of our heroes together at one point or another. We also see some interesting developments in terms of fate and prophecy and such. This topic always fascinated me because prophecy is such an interesting contradiction. The interactions between the characters were great and very interesting. It is scientifically proven that danger tends to bind people faster, and if that is the case these people are practically bonded for the remainder of eternity. There is not a moment in which they have peace to enjoy themselves unless of course you count fighting for your life, getting trapped in tourist attractions, and yelled at by crazy giants as enjoyable activities. Which I do. They are enjoyable activities but only when they don’t happen to me. Call me selfish.

“The point of stories is not that they are objectively true, but that the soul of the story is truer than reality. Those who mock fiction do so because they fear the truth.”
― Cassandra Clare, Chain of Gold
  • Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare- Rating 10/10- I keep letting Cassandra Clare destroy my soul and shatter my heart. Her books get me because the characters in them are so real, and so relatable. I get attached to them, and then Cassie puts them through terrible torture both physical and emotional and I’m just expected to read about it. It does not help that I truly do not trust this woman. She has actually left me gaping in shock. This is not acceptable behavior as an author. This book hit me because of the family interactions and the friendships. There are so many layers to everything and frankly a ridiculous amount of secrets. I somewhat understand the secrets for once because everyone loves everyone else so much that they just want to protect each other even when it will obviously cause so many issues later. I forgave them all everything because I love them.

“It was so easy to disappear, so easy to deny knowledge, so very easy in the smoke and din to mask that something dark had taken root. This was Chicago, on the eve of the greatest fair in history.”
― Erik Larson, The Devil in the White City
  • The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson- Rating 10/10- I have done it! I read the book. I realize that I should not be speaking about it as if it were a strange event for me to read a book, but I have been putting this book off for so long that it truly feels like an accomplishment. I was scared to read it because I build all kinds of expectations about it in my head. Luckily, the book lived up to my expectations. I had a really great time reading about the crazy venture and a crazy psychopath whose paths crossed in a truly terrifying coincidence. It’s also interesting to read about Chicago back in the day. I was never partially attached to the city myself, it’s rather too new for me, but I have to admit that for a city that is so new it has a rather interesting history.  I could read about it all day. And in fact, I have. I spend all day reading this book. I liked the authors writing style. It is easy with history books to read like textbooks and put me to sleep after about half an hour, but this book read like a narrative. History is a story, and Larson tells it well. We do have dates but the dates are placed in context and human interest.

This is it for this week. All the books I have consumed. It is not the best list , but I think it still is a good amount… just not enough to satisfy me. But I am not to be trusted.

See you all next time,

Anna
