July Wrap Up/ August TBR/ Life Update

July Wrap Up/ August TBR/ Life Update

Hello All,

So it is time to confess my shame. I only read three books in July. Three! What even is that? Can I even still qualify as a Book Dragon? Who am I? What have I become?

Seriously I don’t like this version of myself.

Very quickly here are the three books I read:

  • Northern Lights by Nora Roberts- Rating- 8/10- this was a reread. I was hoping it would lead me to get out of this reading slump form hell. Alas, it didn’t work and I’m still here. This one takes place in Alaska and makes me want to visit Alaska. Then I think better of that desire.

  • Hideaway by Nora Roberts- Rating- 6/10- this is Roberts’ newest book, and it was not my favorite. I did not like the heroine. Her entitlement got on my nerves on multiple occasions. The mystery and villain were also not at all exciting. I figured much of this book out in the first few chapters.

  • Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia- Rating- 9/10- This was a buddy read (Hi Rue nad thank you for holding me accountable). I enjoyed it quite a lot. The dark gothic atmosphere was everything I love and adore. The writing was beautiful. I enjoyed the main character. She was strong on the inside, which is an area of strength often overlooked. And while I didn’t think this book was perfect I enjoyed myself reading it. And there were some truly disturbing parts.

How sad is this list? I looked at my Goodreads to compile this list and was truthfully shocked at how little I read in July. I am about two-thirds of the way through The Assasin’s Blade by Sarah J Maas, but I have been reading it at the speed of a snail because my brain would rather send me off on random tangents and make me research brain parasites. Piece of advice for you all? Dont do it.

So about August, I feel strange even making a TBR but live ambitiously I say. So I will make a list, I will make a very ambitious list. The list will taunt me from the internet forever. Without further ado, here we go:

  • The Assasin’s Blade by Sarah J Maas- no this is not cheating. I will finish it in august so it counts. If anyone wants to argue with me please reach out telepathically and I will feel free to ignore you. I am enjoying this book, it will get a high rating. I just wish I could get through it at my usual speed.

  • Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer- This is a buddy read, so it will get read because I at least stick to those. I don’t know how I feel about his book I’m labeling it pure nostalgia and moving on.

  • Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead- This was one of the first books I became deeply obsessed with, and I have missed it. I decided that if I want to reread something I will right now because otherwise there is no hope for me. We have vampires here. We have boarding schools. We have scary magic. These books have everything I like. So I’m in.

  • Thunderhead by Neal Schusterman- I will read this if it kills me. I want to read it. The first book was amazing and I want to know what happens next. It’s just that for some reason I dont pick this book up. It has been glaring at me for months.

  • The Bottle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan- Any time spent with Uncle Rick is time well spent. I’m not sure if I talked about how excited I am about the DIsney+ show they are playing for this series but I am over the moon excited. Until it comes out I will just be reading the books over and over again. I love these characters so much. I want to read the books again because the characters in them feel like friends.

  • Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin- It is officially time for a reread as book two in the trilogy is coming out in September. Honestly, I will take any excuse. This was probably my favorite book in 2019 or at least one of the top ten. I can’t commit to having just one favorite book per year. I fell in love with the world, and the characters and even the creepy magic system. I have ordered way too much stuff for the upcoming release of Blood and Honey and I REGRET NOTHING!

  • The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer- I miss medieval England and history, and learning. With this in mind, I figured this book could be a good substitute for actually going there or taking a class about it. I have read sections before, for a class, but never actually read it cover to cover so now is the time to read it from cover to cover.

  • The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa- this book too has been glaring at me from the shelf. I said I would reread it months ago and have yet to do it. As it is the third book in a series I really can’t say much about it aside from there are faeries. You all know my feelings about magical creatures. There is also a talking cat. I have no reason not to read it, aside from the book aversion I have developed.

This is it for August. I have a lot of rereads and easy- reads on the list because I hope that giving my brain easy work will convince it that working hard is a good idea. Now I will share my exciting life update. I got into Grad School! I was accepted at DePaul University for their MA in Writing and PUblishhg program and I am starting in September. With that in mind, I truly need my brain to get back to normal and start working at full capacity. I am so excited about taking classes again! I missed it! Yes, I am one of those people who deeply enjoys school and classes. Except for math and physics. Stay away from me Satan! I am so happy I got in. It’s been an interesting time getting in and with everything that has been going on in the last few months, it feels great to have some good news.

Alright, that is all for today folks. I am making a blog post schedule and putting it on my wall to shame myself into sticking to self-set deadlines so according to the schedule, I should see you all again on Thursday. I also got a new photo backdrop I’m excited about so look out for the photos (I’m excited about it.)

Thank for joining,

Anna
