Book Releases I am most excited for In August (even though we are halfway through it)

Hello everyone,

So I had this crazy idea. I was going to go through all the book releases I was excited about for the remainder of the year. It was going to be great. Then I sat down to do it and things quickly got out of control. I, as you might have noticed, have a book addiction and want to read all the books ever written. This means I am excited about a lot of books. SO instead of doing a list for the remainder of 2020, I did a list for just August of 2020, even though we are properly into August. In the future, I will do these in advance. I have September stated already. By started I mean I have a list.

A few things to keep in mind as you start looking through this list, there is no organization whatsoever. I just put things down as I came across them. I also have no self-control when it comes to books so this list is long. Like its long. I numbered this, there are 28 books on the list. I hope you enjoy it!

Releases for August 2020

  • Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

Hello, nostalgia! I just want to read this because I want to go back in time and remember teenage me. Granted teenage me was much calmer than my mother who was also reading these books but still. Teenage me was far less jaded.

  • Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles-

Release Date: August 25th, 2020

Okay, this one gives me The Night Circus vibes and I’m here for it. There’s magic, there’s competition, there’s a fascinating setting. I really cannot ask for much more for the premise of a book. I read that there are Filipino elements in the book as well, and that is a culture that does not get a whole lot of page time.

  • The Night Swim by Megan Goldin-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

I have high hopes for the premise here. The book follows a (fictional) true-crime podcast host as she investigates a cold case. There are mysterious stalking letters, a rape case, false accusations, and wrongful convictions. I hope I’m not disappointed. Fingers crossed, but the description sounds amazing.

  •  Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar-

Release Date: August 11th, 2020

87202d1b62f533e52c6b7f074b4f3a74.jpg

First things first, look at that cover. Just look at it. Charlie Bowater is a cover goddess, and I hope she does many more covers next year. Second of all this book was pitched as Neil Gaiman’s Stardust meets Hindu mythology. I love that pitch. The story follows the daughter of a star and a mortal. There is also a quest. Honestly, I skimmed the blurb because I was already hooked. It does not take much with me.

  • Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

This is a sequel so I have no real idea what it is about. I have yet to read the first book Gideon the Ninth, but I know I want to read both. I have heard only amazing things. The things I do know are necromancers in space. That is frankly all I care about. I have also seen people’s reactions after finishing these books and I want to be that level of mess.

  • The Midnight Library by Matt Haig-

Release Date: August 13th (ebook) and September 29th (hardcover)

The first line of the blurb got me. It is as follows “Between life and death there is a library, and within the library, the shelves go on forever.” I could practically hear my heart starting to make excited noises. This novel sounds like it will make me cry, a lot. Just go and read the description for yourself and tell me if I’m wrong

  • Lobizona by Romina Garber-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

This book sounds amazing. It follows an undocumented immigrant, who soon discovers there is more to the world. We get Argentinian folklore, we get cursed cities, we get werewolves and brujas. This is why I love YA fantasy so much, it goes places many adult books do not go. Our heroine goes on a quest as well, and I love quests. Especially when they involve secret pasts and cursed cities. I deeply love cursed cities.

  • They Wish They Were Us by Jessica Goodman-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

This could be the murder mystery of my dreams. If you read my ramblings regularly you know I love ruthless characters, and it sounds like everyone in this book is ruthless. The story takes place in an exclusive and isolated boarding school (check), a secret society (check), and a mystery that needs solving (check). I am ready. Please do not disappoint me Book, I believe in you.

  • Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

Finally, something cute and fun to put on the list. This is the third book in a series of companion novels which also double as contemporary fairy tale retellings. I read the first one and loved it. I have yet to read the second one because of ummmm Reasons. This one is a retelling of my favorite fairy tale, however (Beauty and the Beast) so I will motivate myself relatively soon to read them. These books also deal with fandom and the importance of community for geeks like me. I adore them.

  • Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews-

Release Date: August 25th, 2020

As this is book five in a series I can’t say much about it. It’s urban fantasy and it’s adult. I love this author’s work. Well, technically authors as its a husband and wife team. Those who write books together stay together after all.

  • The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

A magical island that is sinking and requires a sacrifice every year? Sign me up. Sign me up for the reading that is. I do not want to live there. I would die in about two seconds. This book sounds like I will either love it, or I’ll end up hating it for the wasted premise. What I fear most here is The Love Triangle. I fear it deeply. But I am excited about the atmosphere of doom this book promises, and the threat of the ocean drowning everyone. What does that make me? Do not answer that.

  • Set Fire to the Gods by  Sara Raasch and Kristen Simmons

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

Set in a world with elemental magic this book also has gladiators. Our heroine Ash starts a war between the Fire and Earth gods that can only be resolved by gladiatorial games to the death. Sounds like drama and conflict. I am also in a slump after finishing Avatar: the Last Airbender for the fourth time. Maybe this elemental magic will help me out with that. I read one of the author’s other books (just one because Reasons) and I liked it so I have high hopes for this one. I hate it when I have super high hopes.

  • The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

In this book, multiverse travel is possible (yes please), but the catch is that you have to be dead in the world you are trying to visit to be able to visit it (you know what? I’ll take it still). Our heroine is dead in all but eight of the 380 worlds that humanity can travel to. Well, my first thought is something is up with that and I want to know what it is. I love this concept. It sounds like it will raise many questions about power, responsibility, and knowledge. It also sounds like a great SciFi adventure. I can’t wait.

  • Raybearer by  Jordan Ifueko-

Release Date: August 18th, 2020

c06db36ef63509aef3a21a9097459be9.jpg

I gasped when I read the synopsis for this one. It sounds amazing. Our heroine longs to have a family and to belong, which gives me hope for a found family situation. That same heroine also is under a magical wish/ compulsion to kill the Crown Prince whom she has sworn to protect as part of her job. Well, that’s awkward. I believe the world is inspired by African folklore in this one as well which excites me because African mythology is something I want to do more research on.

  • Little Disasters by Sarah Vaughan-

Release Date: August 18th, 2020

I am consciously intrigued. The synopsis and reviews are promising me creepy and I truly and deeply hope it’s creepy. There is talk of how far you’ll go to keep your kids safe, and it sounds like there are some twists there. So this one is going on the list and we shall see.

  • The Faithless Hawk by Margaret Owen

Release Date: August 18th, 2020

This one is a sequel, and as I am still very excited about the first book I have not read it’s going on the list. I know three is something about a found family and thieves and stuff. I don’t remember exactly. I just know I want to read it. And I will, one day. So keep an eye out for this one.

  • The wrong Mr. Darcy by Evelyn Lozada, Holly Lörincz-

Release Date: August 25th, 2020

Pride and Prejudice inspired rom-com. That’s all I needed to know. Plus it’s always good to have a rom-com in the back pocket for a dark day.

  • Paola Santiago and The River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

This is part of the Rick Riordan Presents series, and I love everything Rick Riordan puts a stamp of approval on. This one is Mexican Mythology focused and it sounds amazing. The synopsis mentions La Llorona, and if you are at all familiar with the legend you know just how scary it is. I am curious to see how the author brings humor to this.

  • Heart Bones by Coleen Hoover-

Release Date: August 27th, 2020 (ebook)

Look sometimes I want to get my heart crushed and I have found out that coleen hoover is good for that. The synopsis indicates star crossed lovers who are about to be cruelly separated by fate. Come make me cry book.

  • The Hollow Ones by Guillermo del Toro-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

This is from the author of The Shape of Water and Pan’s Labyrinth and it sounds very good. We have a shadowy presence terrifying FBI agents. A rookie FBI agent who starts trailing an individual claiming to be hundreds of years old. So we have all the elements to make a good horror novel. I loved Pan’s Labyrinth, it made me cry for hours, while I don’t think this will have the same effect I do hope to be terrified.

  • The Companion by Katie Alender-

Release Date: August 25th, 2020

28117989._SY475_.jpg

An orphan is offered a job as a companion to a silent daughter of rich people. Sounds like a perfect set up for a horror novel. Margot moves in because it seems like a solution to her terrible citation, but soon the isolated house starts messing with her mind. I am getting so many vibes from so many horror novels. I have high hopes.

  • The Memory of Souls by Jenn Lyons

Release Date: August 25th, 2020

This is a final installment in the trilogy, so I can’t say much. There are dragons. I love dragons. I have been meaning to read this trilogy since it first came out and because I am a person with many issues I have not done so… but I will. The books will glare at me until I do.

  • Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

Another SciFi for the list! I love all this amazing sounding SciFi coming out. This one follows a resistance fighter who has faked her death to escape the evil empire. I adore this title as well, it’s speaking to me. Its also described as a feminist space opera, and I am all about the girls saving the galaxy from nefarious villains.

  • The Wicked Sister by Karen Dionne-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

A woman released from a psychiatric facility after fifteen years suspects she might not have killed her parents after all and that her sister did it. I’m in. I want to know who done it. Yeah, that’s all I have to say.

  • The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

I will be honest, I want to read it because of the library. In 1913 books from the New York Library start disappearing and years later in 1993, it happens again. I must know what is up with the disappearing books. I have many questions. I am usually very cautious with historical fiction, but this one I want to read.

Goodreads Link: Here

  • Behind the Red Door by Megan Collins-

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

This one deals with kidnapping and the trauma of the events of the past. A woman keeps having deja vu, and senses familiarity in a recent kidnapping of a young girl. I’m officially intrigued. I have always had this weird and unreasonable fear of kidnapping so why not make the paranoia worse?

Goodreads Link: Here

  • The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi

Release Date: August 4th, 2020

I am cautiously optimistic about this one. I could be bored, but I hope I love it. It sounds intriguing. We begin with a death and then explore how it came to be. It could be a great exploration of how the brains of humans work and what drives them. So fingers crossed for the success of this book.

  • Atomic Love by Jennie Fields

Release Date: August 18th, 2020

What? Another historical fiction? Well yes, this one promised me spies and post-war secrets. Our heroine used to work on the Manhattan Project, and now after the war, she’s been asked to look into mysterious things. Well okay book, what are the mysterious things.

Goodreads Link: Here

Okay, this is it. This is my list. I learned that I want to read more books than I thought and that August 4th is actually trying to kill me. Everything is coming out on Augst 4th. What’s that about? What’s the secret?

I hope you enjoyed the list and that I included a nice variety of novels. Hopefully, everyone finds something they love within these books.
